To understand the difference between Spreadsheets and Databases, it's best and easiest to start with a database given it's very limited use.

A Database is an invisible, digital system that stores 1's and 0's. Conceptually it's hard if not impossible for all but a few to really imagine all our digital data devolves down to 1's and 0's that get stored on a medium in some type of alien way that only a minute portion of the worlds population can ever understand. But this gets us no where for main stream understanding so let's hop up an octive!
